一次渗碳体是从液态结晶时产生的,一般是较大的条块状,其大小和多少随合金的成份和冷却速度而定,在过共晶铁碳合金中常见到。这是一种金属间化合物,非金属的性质很明显,性能是硬而脆的,也就是常讲的Fe3C。生产中可通过长时间的高温扩散退火来进行消除。
二次渗碳体在降温时因含碳量变化从奥氏体中而沿晶界析出的,多在过共析钢中出现,一般都是呈网状,由于对性能的影响不利,常可通过正火来打断二次渗碳体网,以改善性能。
此外尚有三次渗碳体,这是在降温时因含碳量变化从铁素体中而沿晶界析出的,在各种钢中都可能出现,只是因为铁素体的碳溶解度变化不大,不易被发现,一般也是呈网状或断续网状。在多数钢中对性能的影响不大,但在低碳钢中有时会因三次渗碳体的出现使塑性下降很多,影响冲压、冷镦等到加工,这时可在加热到AC1以上然后的快速冷却来消除,也可用等温球化退火来处理使之球化。
