A gentleman should keep personal virtues when in distress and benifit the public when in power。

我觉得应该翻译简单点，也简单的理解： When you are rich, you should help others. If you are a poor man, just live your own life.

Troubled, improve yourself; valued, improve the world.

When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.

properous ones should devote their energe to changing the world a better place, while people with less money keep their good personalities as well.
