How to Be a Good Student

School is a friendly place; but it is also a competitive environment. The education you receive there, and the attitudes you develop, will guide you for the rest of your life. Your grades will be especially important in landing your first job, or when applying to graduate school. To be a successful student requires certain skills; but, these are skills that can be learned.

The Basics of Being a Good Student
Prioritize your life: Doing well in school should be your top priority.
Study: There is no substitute.
Always attend class.
Do all of the homework and assigned reading.
Develop self-discipline.
Manage your time.

A good student do not merely go through the motions of attending class, reading the text(s), and doing the homework, expecting these actions to necessarily suffice. Rather, they are continually asking, "Do I really understand what's going on here?" They ask this question of themselves honestly, applying an internal barometer formed from experience to detect the slightest lack of understanding, be it ignorance or confusion. And, if the answer is "No", then the situation is viewed as unacceptable, and more effort is the response.

In traditional view, a good student was one who was only good at studies. For instance, in university, what teachers cared about most was how well the student did in his academic subjects. It did not matter whether a student had good health or not, as long as he got the top marks. At home, parents would urge their children again and again to try to get good marks. Consequently, many students failed to develop more interests in anything except study.
Now the criteria of a good student are changing. As society is developing rapidly, people have come to realize that the traditional standard of a good student is too limited. Today, in addition to being good at studies, a student is also encouraged to cultivate interest in many other things, such as sports, music, and painting. And good students should also engage themselves in some social activities. In short, by the new criteria, a good student should not only achieve good marks in academic subjects, but also have various interests and abilities.
Generally speaking, the criteria of a good student are changing for the better. For one thing, the growth of one’s personality depends on a variety of factors, in addition to that of academic performance. For another thing, the development of modern civilization requires that education should lay emphasis not only on academic subjects but also on the ability to solve problems as well.
