　　1941, the year in which The United States of America joined the World WarⅡ is also the year from which Hollywood paid more attention to the movies about war. Merely in the year 1943, there are 399 movies about the WWⅡ. But the movie that won three Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenwriter is Casablanca which depicted the war subtlely.

　　Someone said that the success of this movie depended mostly on the historical events. That’s because in October 1942 the allied forces landed on Casablanca and only 18 days later Warner Video Corporation issued this movie and send it to the North Africa to the armies. In the next January Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin held a secret meeting at Casablanca then they made a decision to land on Europe, which is also an element that boosted the success of this movie. But 60 years later, this movie is still well estimated and among the Top Ten Movies. We can see there is surely something special in it.

　　It is a melting love story you may think when you are watching it for the first time but in fact it is a movie that praise nationalistic and patriotism. Director set many scenes to make the conflict between French and German, especially when Laszlo and the people in the bar sing La Marseillaise together to against the German’s military songs. It is quite moving. At the end of the movie Rich was made a people of patriotism from an emotionalism by the words of Louis. America and Europe were at war at that time and Movies like this can surly encourage them greatly. So its success at that time is not a hard question to answer.

　　With the coming of Second World War, many eyes in imprisoned Europe turned hopefully or desperately toward the freedom of the America. Many people came from Lisbon to Casablanca to get their visa from black market and the story of this movie was set here, in Casablanca, in Rich’s club. At the beginning of the movie, you may think that Rich is not a good person because a man who trusted him so much got no help from him and was shot in his club. But things changed when his helped a couple to win enough money from his own pocket to buy the visa to get to America. This action changed him into a warmhearted man then at the end of the movie, he tried his best to make sure that Louis and the woman he loved so much to escape from Casablanca made him a real patriot. This kind of from bad to good change made by the director and the acting of the actor is an appealing point of the movie.

　　This is a black-and-white movie, but you may not realize this because from the beginning of the movie you were attracted to it. The end of the movie is out of anyone’s expectation. We thought Rick may die because he killed the officer from German. And the music played in the movie is also quite important. It is called ‘as time goes by’. The beautiful lady’s order of this piece of music, Rich’s angry about Sam’s playing it and that period of memory give the outline of the things happened between Rick and Ilsa. This piece of music gives a feeling of comfortable when you listen to it and it is also the reason why it is still in popular now. As for the La Marseillaise, it is impassioned, even though it appeared in many movies later, but never in one movie did music and nationalism combine together so incisively and vividly. The scene that French fight German by songs continued to be used in other movies, but there is no better one than this.

　　It is a movie of love, of patriotism and of life. Worth watching twice.
